Indian biotechnology sector is 2 percent of the world market, will grow at a rate of 30 percent in next five years.
As many as 800 companies operate in BT sector in India.
Biotechnology industry employs 7000- 8000 professionals every year and existing demanding is three fold.
The country is running short of nearly 3000 PhDs for life sciences.
Follow these simple steps to get a 'Biotech Job'
# 1. Equip yourself: A smart and systematic preparation is enough to grab a biotech job. As first step, master all the basic methods and techniques in biotechnology. You must regularly go through journals, websites and blogs which give vital information and practical tips about the subject. Get strong grip on subject and express the topics in clear, elegant and sophisticated manner. To make it easy, correlate the complex biological process and understand its molecular and biochemical organization. Always prepare regular notes for your readings and revise regularly.
# 2. Learn what companies require: Companies often complain that they are not getting enough trained people for the work. It's a fact that they prefer experienced people than fresh hands. So, freshers must perform maximum job oriented projects during your course time. Always choose projects according to need of industry. For example, A student trying for a job in Biocon must get trained in fermentation or protein engineering than plant biotechnology. Make regular visits to company's websites to know more about recruitment statergies.
# 3. Lets start searching: CVs creates your first impression in recruiters mind. A CV must be simple but appealing. It must include more about your research interests and projects than personal details. One must regularly edit, customize and upload CVs to the recruiters. Remember - A well made CV will perform 50 percent of your task in getting a job.
# 4. Researchers must Write & Speak: "One must not be intelligent to do research, instead he must have a lot of common sense". If you dream for career in R&D, you must be a expert in all basic techniques along with good communication skills. There remains no shortcut to become a expert in the field, the only one piece of advice can be obtain maximum exposure to field, whether in the form of reading, writing or correspondence and preferably all of them. Publish your ideas in blogs and journals to get maximum exposure.
# 5. Prove with exams: BINC, DBT or CSIR are not made for super humans. A systematic - hard work will help to crack all exams. These competitive exams not only fetch you fellowships, instead gives an identity and preference over others. Always have an aspiring mind to prove your talent by getting selected in these exams. You can also rely on good coaching centers and books for better result
# 6. Try, Try and Try more... You'll get: Sorry to see hundreds of biotech students struggling to get a job. Many of them even changed the field and adopted other ways for living. Why it happens? Firstly, Biotechnology field is still in infancy. It requires a minimum of 3 to 5 years from now to attain full growth. Secondly companies prefer experienced hands. They have limited interest and resources to train the freshers. If we keep these overall issues aside, main reason might be biotech job aspirants are unaware about industry profile. They have a little knowledge about company, lab and corporate requirements and standards. Most of them are good in theories than practical techniques. What so ever, this century belongs to biology. Take it from me, biotechnology sector is growing rapidly ensuring job to millions. Thus getting a 'biotechnology job' will not be a difficult task anymore.
Good Luck!
